Getting Started with mainframe-b
With your mainframe-B now in hand, let's go!
Initial set up
- Power your MAINFRAME-B with the external power supply through the DC barrel connector. You should see the PWR green LED turn on.
- Connect the LED strip to MAINFRAME-B through the extension cable. The cable is the red-green-white one, and they only connect one way so don't worry about about direction.
- Connect the USB cable to your computer, or to a 5V, USB-A power source (if using 5-pin MIDI with B+). The MAINFRAME-B board requires USB power either way!
- That's it! You should see lights.
Connecting MIDI
- USB (B and B+): Be sure MAINFRAME is connected to USB-A on your PC/Mac. No special drivers are needed so MAINFRAME should auto-detect as a MIDI device.
- 5-pin (B+): Use the provided TRS-MIDI dongle to connect the TRS 3.5mm connector on MAINRAME-B+
Play!
Or try with your own gear
- USB (B and B+): Set up MAINFRAME-B as you would any other MIDI gear within your software of choice. Ie. "External Instrument" in Ableton, MIDI out CHOP in TouchDesigner, etc.
- 5-pin (B+): Just connect to your existing MIDI setup through a normal 5-pin cable
- Send MIDI notes on channel 1
- Try changing parameter values, watch the lights go, and play around!
Global configuration
Depending on the type of LEDs you are using, you can change a couple of global settings. To enter the global configuration menu, hold down FUNC, MOD and ZONE for 3 seconds.
- Max brightness: By default you are changing this value. Turn the PARAM knob to select a value (displayed on the parameter bar). For LED strips, select some value between half and full. For LED grids, select a low value (maybe between 15-25%).
- Number of LEDs: Press FUNC to change this value. The last LED will be lit up white. Turn PARAM knob to change. Press ZONE to reset to the first LED (just in case the lit up LED is beyond the strip). Make sure to turn the knob one LED past your strip/grid, or else the white light will remain.
